November 15th - 7pm

In 1982, six rural communities across the United States were notified that all of the nation’s nuclear waste might be buried beneath them forever.

Faced with a mandate to isolate the waste for 10,000 years, the Department of Energy mapped, analyzed, and assembled its assessments, while the unsuspecting stewards of sacrificial territory found themselves fighting for their homes, health, history and dignity.

In the end, one site was chosen: a desert ridge in Nevada called Yucca Mountain, on the unceded lands of the Western Shoshone. After decades of controversy, construction at Yucca Mountain was halted, and to this day, no permanent solution has been devised for America’s 90,000 tons of high-level nuclear waste.

Against the impassive logic of government analysis and archives, TO USE A MOUNTAIN assembles a people’s history of resistance and stewardship through a visceral journey across the landscapes, ecologies, and personal histories of the candidate sites. Farmers, miners, citizen scientists, Native American leaders, and activists—each with a story bound to this enduring threat—stand in stark contrast to the cold, silent machinery of bureaucracy, in a meditation on resistance, memory, and the timeless struggle between power and place.

Jude Brothers is a folk derived singer-songwriter from Arkansas, with a penchant for whimsy and tender heartedness. Brothers’ distinct writing style is marked by congenial contrasts: passionate & playful, calculated & relaxed, approachable & quirky.
Their lyrics communicate a simultaneous existential dread and intoxicating thrill of living and loving, a practice in raw and shameless vulnerability shared through song. All of this is transmitted through nimble vocal frolicking- a shapeshifter voice crawling, leaping, pirouetting through a mystical landscape of their own creation.
.....Let’s say you are in a forest, and you don’t know how you got there. A strong voice lilts from an autumnal quiet to a riveting loud stream to sing you the spell of their story. Is it a mockingbird? The spirit of an ash tree? A mischievous, but benevolent forest sprite?
Nay! Tis but your new friend, Jud. Or Jude. Or Judith. With harp, guitar, and sometimes tenor banjo in tow, this freaky little Ozark bard comes bearing gifts- songs from somewhere between the real and the ethereal landscapes of their life.

Austin Cash is an Arkansas born and bred ambient americana musician. Inspired by greats such as Steve Reich, John Fahey, and Brian Eno, Cash began composing music in his later teens growing up in Bald Knob, Arkansas. With a keen observation of Southern Minimalism, his adept musical style helps any listener understand the particular, complicated, ornery, and beautiful heart that is The Ozark Milieu.

We tend to wish for stories with words, to guide us into a narrative that we can then project upon. This is extremely common for Americana, and yet Austin Cash methodically, charmingly, and insightfully asks us with his compositions to allow a yarn to be created while witnessing it, a pure act of listening and gilded restraint.

Johnny Bell is a Northern New Mexico-based musician whose work explores the banjo as a vehicle for expansive, progressive instrumental music. Working from within the lineage of American Primitive music but drawing equally from heavier experimental influences, Bell juxtaposes traditional technique with acoustic drone, recursive patterns, and layered sonic textures, foregrounding the banjo’s darker and more resonant possibilities.

Chaz Knapp - If you thought Fleet Foxes’ White Winter Hymnal evoked the feeling of deepest winter, you should check out this beautifully odd and solitary project from Arkansas-based multi-instrumentalist Chaz Knapp to hear how it’s really done. Chaz is a traditional instrumentalist and field recorder, whose Microfolk series highlighted him as a musical collagist. Winter Music contrasts Microfolk (which was recorded in the summer heat) in that Chaz took his instruments to various locations in the rugged terrain of Northwest Arkansas in the depths of winter, recording with tape loops and improvisations while his fingers froze and his nylon string guitar neck shrank in the cold.
The result is something of a remote and isolated audio diary, as much documenting the playing of Chaz as the sounds of the environments he brings in, from rushing water to whistling winds. Chaz’s nylon string guitar creates gentle chord brushes alongside the natural sounds, and his world-weary voice combines nicely with the soft strings, suggesting vulnerability and being at the mercy of the elements. wm jan23 24(i) is a nice example of this, with the sounds of the river at the forefront and the delicate guitar work nestled behind.

Very special evening of music with Samantha Crain and Jolie Holland October 18th

Tickets

As an Oklahoman I probably don't have to tell anyone here who Samantha Crain is but this will be a very special concert to see her perform in Drifters for a listening room style show. I've been a huge fan of Jolie Holland since high school so this is a bit of a dream come true to have both of these artists performing.
